U13’s – Premier League – Fenit vs Killarney Celtic

On Saturday 15th October we played at home against Killarney Celtic, who were last season’s runners up of the Premier League. The weather conditions were reasonable, just slightly damp. The game started with Celtic having most of the attacking possession. However, Fenit defence of Eoghan, Sean, Ciaran, Padraic & Ciaran in goal together with the midfield of Jason, Christopher, Cormac & Liam showed they were more than capable of stopping a number of attempts on goal by Celtic. On the other hand Fenit were having very few opportunities to press the Celtic defence. Fenit’s best chance in the first half came from a long distance shot from our left back Padraic, causing the Celtic goalie to thumble the ball, but we failed to capitalise on the re-bound which allowed time for Celtic to clear. We also had a number of free kicks at goal but again failed score. At half time it remained 0 – 0. The second half started equally fast & for the first 15 minutes both sides were cancelling each other’s attack. However, our passing game was starting to let us down and we struggled to keep possession. Celtic took full advantage and managed to find time and space in midfield to launch a long range shot which unfortunately ended up in the back of Fenit’s net to make it 0 – 1 to Celtic. In re-action we re-organised from a defensive to a more attacking mode. This worked well to a certain extent. On one occasion good passing between our midfield of Cormac onto Jason & Austin and then to Christopher on the right wing who side stepped three of the Celtic players to find himself clear on goal but his shot from a tight angle was unfortunately blocked by a defender. Celtic appeared to gain in confidence following their goal and took full advantage whilst we were still adjusting to the new formation we gave away far too much possession and 4 more goals followed including an unfortunate own goal from a re-bound off the post. The final score 0 – 5. Whilst Killarney Celtic were deserved winners on the day the score line did not truly reflect a great defensive display from Fenit for most of the game including an outstanding performance from our keeper Ciaran who came off injured just before the final whistle. Too many mistakes in the final 15 minutes at this level & not capitalising on chances earlier gave Celtic amore than flattering score line. In hindsight we were too hasty in our changes after conceding. This appeared to unsettle some players. Unlucky lads, great effort, you deserved more from the game. We will all learn from the experiences in each game and hopefully improve as the season moves on. Thank you to the Referee & all the players of both teams who were very fair and sporting on the day. Fenit squad were Ciaran Murray, Ciaran Carmody, Eoghan McElligott (Captain), Sean Donnellan , Padraic O’Mahony, Cormac O’Brien, Liam O’Donnell , Jason Mortimer, David Lenihan, Christopher Murphy, Austin Clifford, Sean Mortimer, Brian O’Regan & Colm Healy.
