U13’s – Premier League – 29th Oct 2011

On Saturday 29th October we played at home against Kingdom Boys, who were last season’s winners of the Premier League. The weather was dry & sunny following heavy rain overnight, just a strong diagonal cross wind. The game started well for us with a more offensive line out than our previous game. We were enjoying plenty possession. Eoghan, Liam & Sean M in midfield combined well with Jason down the right wing. Our back four of Padraig, Christopher, Sean D & Ciaran were also playing well & made it difficult for Kingdom Boys to penetrate. However, about 10 minutes in, we allowed them too much time & space to launch a long range shot from midfield which looked safe for our keeper Ciaran to catch but it fumbled through his fingers into the net to go 0 – 1 down. Despite the setback we kept at it with plenty of attacking possession & free kicks but our finishing just let us down. About 20 minutes in we conceded a foul in midfield. We naively allowed them too much time & space to lay off a pass and again hit a long range shot into our net to go 0 – 2 down. The game was far from over & we launched a number of attacks. Our striker George dribbled the ball through into their box where his leg was clearly taken out & he fell to ground. Appeals for a penalty were waved off by the Referee. In the mayhem that followed we managed to scramble the ball back in midfield where Eoghan’s attempt to find Jason clear on the right, accidently deflected off the Referee into the path of Kingdom Boys who counter attacked down their left wing. They crossed the ball over our defence into the path of their right winger who appeared a yard offside in our 6 yard box & struck the net to make it 0 – 3. Appeals for offside were again waved away by the Referee. This proved to be the turning point in the game as it could have & should have been 1 – 2 at halftime but was actually 0 – 3. It’s typical, Fenit never seem to get the big decisions at critical stages of the game. Anyway the second half started well with Cormac & Aran upfront gaining possession but unfortunately the Kingdom Boys defence were too strong & held out well. About 10 minutes in, our failure to compete for the ball on the half way line lead to Kingdom Boys attack where their striker was allowed time & space to launch a great shot from the edge of our box & into the net to go 0 – 4 down. By now we were running out of time, but we decided to move Liam upfront to add speed to our strikers. Our next attack, Liam thrust himself forward into the box & was pushed in the back. This time we were awarded a much less critical penalty than the earlier incident. Eoghan stepped up to take the penalty & power in the shot to make it 1 – 4. In the final few minutes Kingdom Boys managed to get one final goal from a header in the 6 yard box. Final score 1 – 5. Well done lad’s you competed well against a very good club side. Also well done to Kingdom Boys who were deserved winners. The Fenit players at times were a good match for Kingdom Boys in general play, however Kingdom Boys superior finishing & quality in possession proved to be the major difference. We will learn from each game & look forward to improving as the season moves on. Fenit squad were Ciaran Murray , Sean Donnellan (Captain), Christopher Murphy , Ciaran Carmody, Padraig O’Mahony, Eoghan McElligott, Sean Mortimer, Cormac O’Brien, Liam O’Donnell , Jason Mortimer, George Downing, Aran Egan, David Lenihan & Brian O’Regan.
