U13’s – Premier League – 26th Nov 2011

On Saturday 26th November 2011 we travelled to Mastergeeha who started well with the diagonal cross wind behind them & for the first 5 minutes pressured our defences. Our failure to clear the ball properly & close down the strikers lead to a goal mouth scramble & the ball was poked in giving our keeper Brian no chance. This early goal was a disappointing but Fenit awoke & responded well with several attacks on the Mastergeeha defence. The half time score was 1 – 0. At halftime our substitute Ciaran was brought on to replace Aran who had had a fine game upfront & looked a great threat but was unable to continue through injury. The second half started well with both teams working the ball end to end. About 10 minutes in & another goal mouth scramble where our opponents were a little sharper to the loose ball which lead to a second goal for Mastergeeha. Fenit were now 2 – 0 down & this scoreline was not representative of the general play, however did underline the opponents longer experience in the Premiership & ability to capitalise on any chance on goal. With 20 minutes to go the game was not over & Fenit’s response was superb. We were now in ascendance & started to dictate play with Eoghan from Centre Back driving the ball forward through our midfield & upto our two strikers , Christopher & Sean D. From this we won a number of free kicks just inside their half & from this pounded their defences. Eventually, one free kick from Eoghan found Sean M in the 6 yard box to head at the goalie who dropped the ball where Christopher pounced to slot the ball in the net for 2 – 1 scoreline. We were now dominating play & with every attack looked liked scoring. Liam, Padraig & George were heroic in defence with Sean M, Jason & the 2 Ciaran’s in midfield showing great strength. With about 10 minutes to go Eoghan dribbled the ball forward pass the Mastergeeha defence & blasted the ball at goal. Unfortunately their goalie was hit in the face by the ball & went down injured. We remained in possession on the edge of the area poised to score the equaliser but the Referee blew to stop the game to attend to the injured goalie. A drop ball was used to re-start the game& by now Mastergeeha had re-grouped & we lost any advantage. A few minutes later we attempted to clear the ball from our penalty area & a powerful clearance from Sean M hit Padraig at close range who went down injured. The ball fell loose & lead to another goal mouth scramble & the ball trickled over the line. This time the only whistle blown was to allow for the goal, quite rightly. The game was stopped for a few minutes to attend to Padraig’s injury before the centre kick as we had no further substitutes. It was unfortunate that the game was not allowed to continue similarly at the other end a few minutes earlier. Yet again Fenit never seem to get the critical decisions. The final few minutes & Fenit did not stop trying. Everyone’s efforts have to be commended & inparticular, Eoghan who was hobbling with an injury from an earlier incident. Final score 3 – 1 to Mastergeeha. Well done to all the Fenit players, you deserved something from this game. Again we will learn & improve as the season progresses. We have the ability to compete with the best in this league, we just need to believe it. Congratulations to Mastergeeha players who were very sporting. Also well done to the Referee who had a reasonable game despite a couple of debatable decisions which unfortunately did not go our way. We started out with 3 substitutes but unfortunately 2 of them decided not to take part when they learned they may not be starting despite travelling with us. We are a small squad & rely on everyone for their attendance, ability & attitude. It is a fact that only 11 players can start & that some will be disappointed in not starting. It is unfortunate that the 2 players did not make themselves available to help their team mates & therefore the club. We had no substitutes to replace our injured players or to inject some fresh legs into our play. They had also decided to disappear during the second half & did not offer any support. May we take this opportunity to thank the staff of Mastergeeha who were on hand to help our injured with water. Fenit squad were, Eoghan McElligott, Christopher Murphy, Sean Donnellan, Padraig O’Mahony (Captain), Sean Mortimer, Jason Mortimer, Brian O’Regan, Liam O’Donnell, Ciaran Murray, George Downing, Aran Egan, Subs were Ciaran Carmody, Austin Clifford & David Lenihan.
