U16s Lose Out Narrowly Despite A Good Performance

We played our second match of the season last Saturday away to Listowel Celtic. We lost 2-1 in the end after a pulsating encounter where a there was a good standard on view. We started the game well and were into our stride early. Much of the first 20 minutes was played in the Listowel half and we forced a few chances early on and twice we could have scored from crossed balls but  we hit the post and shot narrowly wide. Gradually Listowel got back into the game and scored twice between the 20th and 25th minute. The first was from a free where we failed in the basics of marking. We left a runner go hoping for an offside call which never came and their centre forward made it 1 nil. They upped the tempo for the next 10 minutes, moved the ball quickly and forced us into chasing the ball. From one of these moves a midfielder struck from 25 yards into the top corner and there was nothing Eoghan could do about it. For the rest of the half we were compact in defence but regained a bit of a foothold in the game in the middle of the field. Jamie and Padraig were solid and not much got past them. Antoin and David in the centre won most of the ball that came their way. In midfield David and Jack worked like Trojans which allowed us to be able to compete with a team that 2 seasons ago won this division. On the flanks were Oisin and Thomas and both worked up and down the pitch and always were dangerous on the ball. Up front Cian and Sean kept their defence honest with hard chasing but it was only in the second half that both looked dangerous offensively. So it came to the second half and overall we felt we had the better of things. We probably created a number of chances by passing through our opponents but it would be fair to say that at the other end there was some last gasp defending with Eoghan and Jamie having to make some last ditch clearances to keep us in the game. Eventually with 14 minutes left on the clock Cian finished off a great move involving David Murphy at the back releasing Jack in midfield who linked with Thomas Lenihan who had come on 15 minutes into the second half. Thomas played a one two with new signing Darren Bastible and from the return Thomas played in Cian and he scored. We chased hard for the remainder and did create a few chances which on another day we would have scored but it was not to be. Well done to all our lads on the day Keep up the good work.
