Our senior team got back to winning ways at Mounthawk Park on Sunday morning as we got the upper hand against a tough Ardfert team. We started well and controlled possession with Jack Savage, Ger McCarthy and Daniel Clinton linking up well early on to create a few half chances. That early pressure told when we took the lead when Jack took a shot from the edge of the box that trickled into the corner of the net. The goal seemed to settle us even more and we were building some decent attacks through our wingers Bill Mullins and Kevin Walsh, while our full backs David O’Sullivan and Kieran O’Mahony overlapped very effectively. Ger scored our second goal midway through the half when he brilliantly lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper after the ball broke to him on the edge of the box. It was nonchalant to say the least, similar to a goal George Best once scored. We finished the half strongly as we kept pushing for another goal to settle the game but we couldn’t find the net again before the half time whistle.

The second half was a different story as Ardfert started brightly and put us under real pressure. They looked most dangerous from set pieces but our goalkeeper Eoghan O’Brien was commanding in the goal area. Darren Lynch and John Maher were outstanding at the back as they dealt well with any attacks and always looked to play out from the back throughout the game. The game was becoming stretched and direct running from Bill, Daniel and Kevin was creating chances for us, but again we couldn’t convert. Ardfert pulled a goal back through a superb Mairtin Ferris header and it looked like it would be a nervy finish to the game. Batty channeled his inner Jose Mourinho and brought on Jack McCarthy, which proved to be a stroke of genius as Jack scored soon after as he finished superbly from Kevin’s cross. Cormac O’Connor was introduced late on as well and his pace up front kept the Ardfert back four on their toes as we closed out the game comfortably.

A great performance from the Samphires and a much needed win as we continue to push towards the top of the table. Thanks to Ardfert for an entertaining game.
