Newtown Athletic-0

The Samphires’ continued their run in the Reserve Cup on Sunday morning in Samphire Park with a convincing win over a poor Newtown side. Despite the heavy rain over the weekend the pitch was in immaculate condition which suited our playing style. We set our stall out from the start and looked to get the ball down as much as possible. As usual our back four of Jack McCarthy, John Maher, Darren Lynch and Cormac O’ Connor provided the foundation for much of our good play as they circulated the ball well and started several attacks. Despite being on top in the opening exchanges, Newtown managed to trouble us with a couple of long range efforts which Eoghan O’ Brien dealt with easily. Up front Daniel Clinton and Kevin Walsh were causing problems as the visitors struggled to deal with their movement. We hit the front mid way through the half when Dano was taken down in the box and Kevin put the resulting penalty away. Once the goal went in we took complete control of the game as Peter McCarthy and Ruairi Kelly in midfield started to dictate the play while David Murphy and James Sweeney were threatening in wide areas. We got our second shortly after when Peter found Dano with a superb through ball and he pulled it back to Ruairi who calmly finished. We continued to create chances throughout the half and we went into half time 3-0 up as Kevin got his second when he finished from close range.

The second half continued where the first had left off as we went looking for more goals. U17 player David Murphy scored our 4th- his first senior goal- when he finished from a tight angle after Dano once again skint a few defenders. By this time the visitors had enough as they called for the game to be blown up early, but we weren’t finished yet. Dylan Ronan came off the bench to make his senior debut as we searched for a 5th goal. That goal arrived when Peter found the net with a superb free kick from distance. This was the final nail in the coffin as referee Willie Gorman blew full time with about 20 minutes still to play.

It was another superb performance from the Samphires even though we were missing several players who are away for the summer. Our cup run continues on Sunday afternoon when we play Ballymac Galaxy in the next round.
