Good Win For The 17s

The 17s had a goSamphiresLogoGreenod 5-2 win last Saturday away to Castlegregory. Earlier in the season we played them in Fenit and were made to work hard for a victory and last Saturday’s game was no different. Even though we were on top in general play we never opened up a gap on our opponents until the final 15 minutes. We went 1 up through Cormac O’Brien after a good through ball from Sean Collins. Though we had more possession Castle got in behind us twice, hit the bar once and shot narrowly wide with the other after Brian O’Regan in goals had narrowed the angle. Soon after Conor Lowe made it 2 after some good interplay with his  Christopher Murphy. We had a number of good efforts thwarted at this point as Castle refused to concede any more ground but just as it looked like it would remain 2-1 at the half, Cormac floated a beauty into the box, Sean Donnellan forced a save off the keeper but Dean Meehan was on hand for our third. The second half started as the first ended as we pushed for a 4th to kill off the game but again we conceded possession in front of our box and an opposing midfielder latched on to it to fire it into the top corner. Our lads were not going to be denied though and pushed on to create another few chances and eventually the pressure told with a penalty from Cormac after Sean Donnellan had been taken down and Sean himself got our 5th. Our back 5 of Brian, David Lenihan, Ossie Clifford, Ciaran Murray and Ciaran Carmody had to be at their best especially with the soft underfoot conditions but did well to keep a dangerous set of attackers at bay. Subs in the second half, Ed Moynihan and Jack Lynch both did very well again and their retention of the ball was of a high standard. Well done to all the lads on a hard fought victory and we wish them all the very best with their last 16 National Cup game in Galway next weekend.
