Boys U16s: Fenit Samphires 3 vs 5 Listowel Celtic (Scorers A. McGrath(2), B Walsh)

A very brave performance from Samphires came up just short against a strong and physically imposing Premier Division opposition, in what turned out to be a highly competitive fixture. Playing with the wind we didn’t come out of the traps and were duly punished after just five minutes from a corner. However, Samphires settled into the game and stretched Listowel on several occasions before Oisin McGibney had the ball in the net after a half hour but was very harshly adjusted offside. Listowel then scored a fortuitous second to make it 2-nil at the break. Samphires went further behind 15 minutes into but never buckled and deservedly reduced the deficit to 3-1 when Alex McGrath bundled the ball over the line. Twenty minutes left and all to play for when we scored again through captain Billy Walsh, to make it 3-2. Game on, but Listowel stretched their lead to 4-2 after a defensive lapse. Samphires bounced back yet again and Alex McGrath finished following a fine cross. Listowel made it 5-3 late in the game to run out winners having been given a thorough examination by the home side. Best for us in a great team performance were Jerh Brosnan, Gary O’Riordan, Michael Tansley and Donagh Murphy.

Boys U14s:Fenit Samphires 3 vs 9 Listowel Celtic (Scorers M O’Sullivan, J Carey, C Nolan)

1st game back since last September, we could offer this as an excuse for a poor first half performance but it was the same for both teams. Listowel had us under the cosh from the off and didn’t relent. It was 5 nil at half time for the visitors and we couldn’t have any complaints with Listowel’s power and pace was a continuous threat for us. Nevertheless, towards the end of the first half there were some green shoots as we came into the game as we started to keep possession and created a couple of chances. After the break we continued to improve, we pretty much matched our opponents and the second half was much better from our point of view. It was an open half of soccer and both teams created a good few chances. We got 3 and Listowel got 4 to leave it 9-3 to Listowel at the end. Still, despite the result and the first half performance, it was great to be back.
