U14s Courageous In Defeat

Last week our U14s finished their season with a home match against Killarney Athletic. We lost 6-2 but in fairness to our lads they gave their all on the night and no more could be asked of them. Unfortunately we were only able to field 10 as a few lads were unable to play through injury. We elected to play with one up front with two lines of four behind them. The game started at a high tempo and our lads were very tenacious. After 20 minutes it was still nil all but as we expended energy gaps started to appear and Athletic scored despite our best efforts. After another 5 minutes it was 2 and we conceded a third right on half time. Our back 5 of Brian O’Regan in goals, David Lenihan and Padraig O’Mahony at right and left back with Ciaran Murray and Cormac O’Brien in the centre did very well throughout and could not be faulted. Ciaran Murray in particular was a tower of strength despite playing with an injury. Towards Sean Donnellan strained a muscle in midfield after running miles for us and we switched him with Cormac into centre back and he defended well for the remainder of the game. The second half was going to be a tough one for us but we gave as good as we got and even though we conceded another 3 we scored 2 of our own through Christopher Murphy after some clever through balls from Ciaran Carmody and Stephen Dolan respectively. These 3 with Ossie Clifford and Cormac O’Brien ran their socks off  and tackled hard in midfield and kept going right to the end and great credit is due to all the players for the performance against the odds on the night. Thanks too to the parents who supported the team and finally the biggest thanks of all to Padraig MacGarry who looked after the lads throughout the season.
