U17s Snatch Defeat From Jaws Of Victory

Last weekend we hosted Killarney Celtic in a very blustry Fenit. It was a match which had it all – goals, a penalty, lots of chances, wonderful saves ,good play and a good bit of bite. Somehow we managed to lose the game 4-3 when it seemed we would win. There was a good pace to the game to the game all through as neither team was willing to give an inch. Celtic started slightly on top possession wise but as our passing improved  we came into it. We scored first after 10 minutes with a most bizarre goal when keeper Eoghan O Brien kicked long with the wind. It bounced just outside their box and went over their keeper who misjudged it in the swirling wind. We continued on top for the next 20 minutes and we scored a fantastic goal when Sean Higgins took the ball down in a crowd and combined with Oisin O Brien who produced some fantastic skill to put us 2 up with an absolute cracker. For the last 10 minutes we were under the cosh and conceded a goal after some disjointed defending. Then we conceded a penalty for handball for the 2nd game in a row but Eoghan somehow kept it out. Some last gasp defending and a super save kept it at 2-1 at halftime. Celtic started again well in the 2nd half and forced a succession of corners and eventually scored a good header. 10 minutes later David Egan sent us on the attack down the right and Sean and Oisin again combined with Oisin again scoring superbly for 3-2. From here to the last 10 minutes we did very well and should have put the game to bed but a series of misses kept Celtic in the match. With 10 to go an innocuous through ball led to a complete mishit by one of our defenders and it finished in the net for 3 all. Both teams went for it then, both created chances but unfortunately they scored and we didn’t so it finished 4-3 to Killarney. So we finished disappointed for the second time this season against Killarney as we lost both in the last 10 minutes when we feel we should have got something both times. Nevertheless a good effort by our lads who showed once again we can be a match for the best when we believe in ourselves and play as we can. Best for us were Padraig O’Connor and Paul Nolan.
