16s Win Tough Encounter

Samphires U16s had a hard fought 3-1 victory over Inter Kenmare last weekend in Fenit. We played well in the first half and defended tigerishly in the second but we could never let up against a bigger team who were also able to play when they got the chance. They had the benefit of the breeze in the first half but we had more of the play in the main because of the dominance of our centre pairing of Sean Donnellan and Christopher Murphy. At the back our big 2 of Ossie Clifford and Ciaran Murray had to be strong for us and both stepped up to the plate. Up front Ciaran Carmody had a stormer both in terms of bringing others into the game and keeping their defence on their toes. We  scored after 20 minutes through Cormac O Brien from midfield who is now on quite a scoring run. Sean scored next with a shot into the far bottom corner from 20 yards. We combined well in this half all over the pitch with newcomers Ed Moynihan and Jack Lynch improving from game to game. Each made telling contributions both offensively and defensively. Our 2 full backs of David Lenihan and Alan McElligott were in top form, both starting many of our attacks and giving us an out ball when we were in trouble. Brian O’Regan in goals was assured as we have come to expect especially in the first 10 minutes under the high ball. In the second half Kenmare played more direct football and it was all hands to the pump for us for periods but we did well and we scored again on the counter through Christopher to make it 3 with 20 minutes to go. We introduced Padraig O’Mahony in defence and were delighted to welcome him back. We also brought Cian Donnellan and Keaven McElligott on for the last 10 minutes and both helped the cause even though they both had an u14 game before this match. Kenmare’s pressure did pay off eventually and they scored with 5 minutes to go and it finished 3-1.Well done again to all the lads for their efforts.
