Our 17s continued their good form last weekend with a win in Killarney versus Athletic. The home club did a great job getting the pitch playable and even though it was soft in the middle both teams did their best to serve up some good football. Athletic started well and should have gone 1 up after 5 minutes when they hit the post with a shot from 25 yards. It took us about 15 more minutes to get into the game but importantly our back 5 of Ciaran Murray in goals, David Lenihan, Ciaran Carmody, Aussie Clifford and Alan McElligott were solid. We got on top after 25 minutes and created many chances with Christopher Murphy, Ed Moynihan, Dean Meehan and Cormac O’ Brien all coming close. We unfortunately had a goal disallowed after a tight offside call went against us. On 40 minutes against the run of play we conceded a needless goal after some miscommunication at the back. 2nd Half – We continued to dominate proceedings after the break but it took a mistake by the opposition to let us back into the game when a Sean Donnellan shot from 30 yards ended up in the net when the opposing keeper lost the ball in the sun. 3 minutes later Cormac scored from a free after Sean Donnellan was taken down at the edge of the box. Christopher made it 3 – 1 when he tapped in after Podge Donnellan crossed and Podge himself scored a cracker to end the game as a contest. We had a few more chance but failed to add to our total, with Alan, Ed and Chris all coming close. Down the other end Athletic continued to stretch us on the break and Ciaran in goals saved our bacon on more than one occasion. It was a good victory for us as we were short 4 players on the day leaving us with the bare 11, so well done to all the lads.
